1. Introduction

These terms cover your use of Word by Word, a personal vocabulary diary app for iOS made by Eniku AB, a Swedish company. By installing or using Word by Word, you agree to what is written below.

2. What Word by Word is — and what it isn't

Word by Word is a personal diary for words you encounter in another language. You type a foreign word and your own translation, and Word by Word saves it and helps you find it again later.

Word by Word runs on iOS 17.4 or later. Capture, local grouping, recap browsing, and search are designed to work on device. Server-backed features such as account sync and Wiktionary dictionary lookup are documented in our Privacy Policy.

Word by Word is not:

• A certified translation service
• A language course or study program
• A certified educational tool
• Medical, legal, or professional advice of any kind

If you are seriously learning a language, use Word by Word alongside real teachers, textbooks, and dictionaries; not instead of them.

3. Your account

You can use Word by Word in two ways:

• Anonymously. When you first open the app, we generate a random identifier and keep it in your device's Keychain. There is no sign-up form. Your words live on your device.
• Signed in with Apple. Optional. We receive only Apple's stable identifier for you (the sub claim), no name and no email. Signing in lets your data sync to our servers so you can recover it later.

If you sign in with Apple, you are responsible for the security of your Apple ID. We cannot help you recover an Apple ID, and we cannot give your data to anyone other than the Apple ID it is tied to.

4. Acceptable use

Use Word by Word for its purpose: saving words you want to remember. Please don't:

• Try to flood our servers, bypass rate limits, or scrape data you don't own
• Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract our API keys or model prompts
• Use Word by Word to store content that is illegal in Sweden or the EU
• Use Word by Word on behalf of another person without their knowledge

If you abuse the service, we may rate-limit, suspend, or delete your account. For serious abuse we will preserve the minimum evidence needed and may report it to authorities.

5. Your content

The words you save are yours. We do not claim ownership of your diary.

To make the app work, you give us a narrow, non-exclusive license to:

• Store your saved words on your device and, if you are signed in, on our servers
• Process saved words and optional notes on your device so the app can support search and local grouping
• Send saved word text to the Word by Word backend for Wiktionary dictionary lookup and account sync
• Display your own words back to you inside the app

This license ends when you delete the word, delete your account, or uninstall the app, whichever comes first. We do not use your words to train any model, and we do not sell them.

6. Dictionary content

Word by Word uses local device frameworks for rough grouping and search. Dictionary examples and definitions may come from public Wiktionary-derived data.

Dictionary data is derived from Wiktionary, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0 and GFDL. Structured data was processed using Kaikki/Wiktextract.

Dictionary content and cluster labels can be incomplete or wrong. Treat them as helpful reference material, not as authoritative language instruction. If accuracy matters to you for a specific word, check a trusted dictionary or a teacher.

7. Service availability

Word by Word is a free app maintained by a small team. We do our best to keep it running, but we do not promise a specific uptime, and we do not offer an SLA.

Things that might cause downtime:

• Routine maintenance
• Failures at our hosting provider, Apple system services, or processors described in the Privacy Policy
• Bugs we are still fixing

If the server is unreachable, anonymous use of the app on your device continues to work. Capture, search, local grouping, and recap browsing remain available; sync and dictionary lookup may be unavailable.

8. Termination

You can stop using Word by Word at any time:

• Uninstall the app to remove the anonymous data on your device
• Settings → Delete account to permanently remove your server-side data

We may suspend or terminate your access if you break section 4. For serious violations we may do this without warning; for everything else we will try to reach you first if there is a way to do so.

If we shut down Word by Word entirely, we will announce it in-app at least 30 days before turning off the servers, and we will provide an export of your data during that window.

9. Disclaimers

Word by Word is provided "as-is." We do not warrant that:

• The app will be free of bugs
• Dictionary content or cluster labels will be accurate
• Search results will be complete
• The service will always be available

For language learning, consult real teachers, textbooks, and native speakers. Word by Word is a notebook, not a tutor.

10. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Eniku AB is not liable for indirect or consequential damages arising from your use of Word by Word, for example lost data on your device, missed deadlines, or words you forgot because of an incorrect label.

This limit does not apply to:

• Your statutory consumer rights under Swedish and EU law, which you keep regardless of what this document says
• Death, personal injury, fraud, or gross negligence on our part, which cannot be disclaimed under EU law

11. Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of Sweden. Disputes that cannot be resolved by emailing hello@wordbyword.se go to the Swedish courts, with Stockholms tingsrätt as the court of first instance.

If you are a consumer resident in the EU, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory rules of your home country, and you may also use the European Commission's online dispute resolution platform.

12. Changes to these terms

If we make material changes to these terms, we will announce them in the app at the next launch and update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Routine, non-material clarifications may be made without an in-app announcement.

If you do not agree with a material change, your options are to stop using Word by Word and, if you signed in, to delete your account.
